The Hole Story of the Doughnut by Pat Miller tells the story of how our modern day doughnuts came to be. You and your students won't want to miss this one!
The book starts out with the story of how doughnuts came to be. They started out when 14 year-old Hanson Gregory served as a cabin boy on a schooner. He wanted to find a way to make the horrible bread the sailors were eating a little more exciting. He first made dough that just sank down in stomachs and made everyone feel awful, calling them sinkers. Through his ingenuity, he was able to make something that everyone loved and still loves today.
The book also touched on legends of how doughnuts were created, always coming back to the true story of doughnuts. Children of all ages (and adults) will enjoy finding out how one of our favorite foods came to be.
The book gleans a great deal of information, perfect for building background knowledge. It also helps students understand that even back in the day, people haven't always been telling the truth about what has really happened.
No matter how you like your doughnuts, The Hole Story of the Doughnut will help you and your students understand a lot more about doughnuts in a fun and engaging way!
