Tomorrow is the first day of autumn, and I am ready for the cooler weather, colorful leaves, and piles of leaves to jump in. But Fletcher isn't. In the book, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves (affiliate link), the reader finds out how Fletcher the fox feels about the changes that are happening around him.

Book Summary

Fletcher, a young fox, seems to be confused by the changes in the weather, but he is really distraught when his favorite tree doesn't look so hot. The leaves begin changing color, and he thinks the tree is sick. He takes care of it each day and protects it from the animals around it. Though his mother tells him all is OK, he still worries about the tree. Little does he know that everything will be all right.

Classroom Application

Obviously, teachers could use this book to help children understand the changing of the seasons. It gives a great segue into a discussion about what happens as the leaves fall off of the trees. This also gives a great way to help young children understand cause and effect. Through and through, Fletcher will help children better understand that as the seasons change, the plants and animals must adapt to them to survive. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves makes learning about the world around us at this time of year fun and exciting.

Now that fall is right around the corner, what are you most excited about?
