Book Talk Thursday ~ Mardi Gras Fun!

Laissez les bons temps roulez with Book Talk Thursday this week!

Next Tuesday is one of my favorite days ~ Mardi Gras!  Growing up in Louisiana I remember always having Mardi Gras off when I was in school.  We used to have King Cakes every week and wear lots of purple, gold, and green.  It was a festive time of year!

I love teaching my students about the traditions that I grew up with, and the book I am going to read to my third graders this week will be perfect for helping them understand the concept of Mardi Gras: Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras.

Gaston has been invited by his cousin Alphonse to go visit him for Mardi Gras.  Gaston doesn't understand the concept, and a young boy says the only way to understand is to go there for yourself.  Gaston goes to New Orleans to experience Mardi Gras firsthand.  When he does, he sees floats being build, parades down the streets, and grand balls in the city.  It is an experience he will never forget.

This book is perfect for introducing elementary age children to the tradition of Mardi Gras.  The illustrations show students what the city looks like and how people are dressed for the occasion.   I am going to read this book to my third grade group before we work with my Mardi Gras Fun Unit.

This unit is full of everything you need to help your students understand the traditions of Mardi Gras.  There are vocabulary cards, a passage for each year through 2016, predicting activity, main idea/details activity, comprehension check, and a game.  My students love this unit and enjoy every minute of it.
