Five for Testing Friday

It's Friday!

This week we started our state testing, and I have been administering tests to students in various grade levels.  It is extremely boring!  We are not supposed to do anything that could hinder us from monitoring, so I found a few things to do that allowed me to monitor like crazy!

1.  I got my Quick Checks, which I us for RtI put into a notebook.  All I had to do was put them into a notebook.  I have just been getting them off the Internet when I needed them, but now they are in one place!  Took me three years to figure this one out!
2.  I put the stickers on my Reading Response Spinners.  There is one for fiction and one for nonfiction.  The back has reading response stems, but the picture is blurry.  Sharpie markers didn't work right, so I improvised with labels.   You can read about making and using the spinners in this post.

3.  I jotted down some ideas for the book I am going to use with second grade next week.  I was able to start working on it later today and hope to have it finished and listed by the end of next week.  Here is the book we are going to use.
4.  I actually got some money to spend this year, so I browsed catalogs while roaming my little room.  Turn a page.  Monitor.  Turn a page.  Monitor.  It kept me awake!!

5.  My dear third graders take their reading test next week.  The other day we worked on this passage and following directions to find the answers to the questions.  They did pretty good with it for the most part.

And I leave you with this picture of what I did after a day of testing!  Each night we walked the block, and my little girl blew dandelions right into the neighbor's yard!

My son was at my parents' house, so I am excited to see him tonight!  It stinks to have different spring breaks, but at least everyone stayed well this year!  Next year will be better!

What were you up to this week?  Head on over to Doodle Bugs Teaching to let us all know!

  1. We finished up our testing two weeks ago - it is so draining! You are lucky that you got to look through catalogs. We aren't allowed to do anything but monitor.

  2. Our testing is next week! This is the first time in 25 years that I have not had a full classroom to test. I am now the STEM lab teacher, which means no homeroom and no test. EXCEPT, I will be testing a small group of four kids that have an IEP. I imagine it is going to be very boring. Time spent with those kids of yours is precious. Mine are 25 and 28!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I am doing small group too and had to have something to do to stay awake, even if it was just flipping pages in a catalog or flipping a pen in my hand. I have no room to really walk, and the kids told me I was making them nervous when I walked the room last year. Last year we were able to do just about anything, but this year is so different. We will have two and a half weeks left of testing, and I am not looking forward to it! Good luck with testing!

  3. We had our testing this week. We aren't allowed to do anything except walk around monitoring for 4 hours. I wish we could get some little things done! We even have to switch rooms with another teacher so we're not monitoring our own class. Adorable picture of your daughter!

  4. Could you tell me more about your quick checks. I am a K-6 reading specialist in a small rural school in South Dakota. Thank you. Liz
