Changing Seasons on Book Talk Thursday

Tomorrow is the first day of autumn, and I am ready for the cooler weather, colorful leaves, and piles of leaves to jump in. But Fletcher isn't. In the book, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves (affiliate link), the reader finds out how Fletcher the fox feels about the changes that are happening around him.

Flipping for Fall with Strega Nona

Welcome to the Flipping for Fall blog hop!  I have teamed up with many of my literacy friends to bring you some of the best resources to use for comprehension strategies for autumn.

Growing up in Louisiana, we didn't see the trees change the gorgeous colors of fall like we do here in Virginia.  I love, love, love to see the trees in all their glory as I drive down the road or look out in my yard.  The mountains are beautiful this time of year!

Summarizing

Summarizing is tricky for many children.  They always want to retell what they have heard or read.  The idea behind summarizing is to make it short and sweet.  One or two sentences is all you really need to get the point across.  In fiction, it gets to the main idea of the story in an easy way.  I love using the book Strega Nona's Harvest this time of year to help students focus on summarizing.  The simple story line is perfect for children to work with.

Before working with this book, we worked on focusing on the main idea and summarizing with familiar fairy tales.  You can read that post {here}.

I then got the kids interested in the story by sharing some ideas in the book and giving some background knowledge.  We then created the foldable to be ready and thinking while I was reading because "reading is thinking" in my room!

While reading the book, my students listened to hear the answers to their questions.  After reading, we filled in the foldable to summarize the story.  Here are some examples as well as the finished product.

Book Talk Thursday ~ Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie

Fall is here, and it is time to start thinking about one of my favorite things ~ apple pie!  For Book Talk Thursday, I am sharing a fun book and freebie!

Do you love Amelia Bedelia?  I sure do, and I am so happy that there is a new series of books about Amelia when she was younger.  Amelia Bedelia always loves to cook in her books, and it is the one thing she is actually good at doing.  In the book, Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie, Amelia finds out what it takes to make an apple pie.

When I think of Amelia Bedelia, I think of her making major mistakes because she does not understand the multiple meanings of words.  In this book, Amelia Bedelia is portrayed as a young girl who is still learning. Though she doesn't understand everything, you can tell that it is more innocent ~ perfect for young children.

Like other Amelia Bedelia books, this book has a few idioms and multiple meaning words in it.  My favorite is when her grandfather tells her they are going to the farmer's market to get apples, and she thinks they are going to buy a farmer.  It reminds me of the innocence of children.

I have created a freebie to use with the book.  It focuses on using idioms and multiple meaning words.  The flip flap book has three sayings from the book on the outside.  On the inside, students can draw a picture or write what Amelia thinks it means and what it really means.  This is perfect for interactive notebooks or a simple assessment of understanding.  Click {here} or on the picture below to grab your freebie.

Book Talk Thursday ~ Strega Nona's Harvest

Fall is in the air, and it is time for another Book Talk Thursday!

  One of my new favorite harvest books  is Strega Nona's Harvest.  My friend Carla from Comprehension Connection gave me this book, and I have fallen in love with it!

The book features Strega Nona and Big Anthony.  In the book, Strega Nona teaches the community to plant a garden, focusing on rows and using the land correctly.  Big Anthony doesn't heed her advice and takes some seeds to plant however he wants. When his garden overflows and becomes a mess, he puts all of the crops on Strega Nona's doorstep.  She must find something to do with all of his goodies, so she shares them with the community since the harvest was poor.  What a wonderful story!

There are so many lessons children can learn from the story too!  Children will benefit greatly from comparing Strega Nona's way of planting a garden with Big Anthony's way.
