How to Use Games to Encourage Learning Phonic Decoding Skills

Using games in small groups can help reinforce skills our students have learned.

As a reading interventionist, I have the ability to do things differently than classroom teachers. I spend my days rotating small groups in and out of my room or within the learners' classrooms. Throughout the week, we focus on various skills, especially phonics skills.

My Reading Crew friends and I have teamed up again to bring you freebies and advice for the upcoming school year!

Even when learners have difficulty with comprehension, I find that it is because of lack of decoding skills, morphology, or background vocabulary. This is where I come in to make it all come together for these learners.

By the end of a unit, which usually lands on a Friday, we are all ready for a break. This is where I throw out some games to review the phonics skills we have learned throughout the week.
Using games for review is a great way to enhance phonic decoding skills

Because I follow my own Orton-Gillingham progression, I create my own games to play with my students. They are pretty basic and can be used by anyone, but I always make sure that the games include words or phrases my students can read.

These games allow us to review both reading and writing of the words. It also leads to vocabulary exploration as needed too. Adding that bit of fun helps everyone review and learn, even when it doesn't seem like it.

My Phonics Games Bundle includes many games I have used with my students for review. They span various different phonics skills with easy to follow (or adapt) rules. Click on the link to see what games are included. As I create games, I add them to this bundle too! Through August 4, my Phonics Games Bundle will be 20% off!
