Angela Dominguez uses the story of her Abuelo, Apolinar Navarrete Diaz, to help readers better understand how we can all react when things don't always go our way. The book Sing, Don't Cry tells the story of how Abuelo overcame troubles and tragedy through song.

Each year, Abuelo would come from Mexico to visit. Each time he would tell stories of his days while there, even though they weren't always happy.

He always reminded his family that crying never helped anything, but singing through it all would life spirits and make things seem better than they really were.

What a great reminder for all of us to find something to help us feel better when things don't seem so wonderful! Using the book, Sing, Don't Cry, with our own students can help them cope with situations, no matter what.
