Believing in the Magic of Christmas

Using various comprehension skills can help students find theme in the books they read. Using read alouds helps them on their journey to better comprehension. Santa's Book of Names is perfect for that.

You may have thought that I missed a week of Book Talk Thursday, but I have been preparing this little unit to share with all of you. I have linked up with all of my friends at The Reading Crew for a Facebook Live hop. If you missed it, the video is below, highlighting my book choice.

Book Summary

In the book, Santa's Book of Names (affiliate link), David McPhail tells the story of Edward, who can't read. Edward finds "Santa's book" and goes on the ride of his life with Santa on Christmas Eve. Edward is surprised when Santa needs help, and Edward is the only person there who can help out.

Classroom Application

Students can use so many different comprehension skills to help them find the theme of the story. I used character analysis and summarizing to help students find the theme of the book. Using it as a read aloud helps students as they learn and review comprehension skills.

Watch the video to see how you could use this book in your classroom as a read aloud!
