Creative Thinking with One Halloween Night On Book Talk Thursday

One Halloween Night is a fun book that helps students think of their own problems and solutions and leads to great predictions throughout the book.

As I scrounged all over for something new to read to my kids for Halloween, I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of the book One Halloween Night by Mark Teague. I have read so many of his books and love the adventure in them, especially when it involves Wendell, Floyd, and Mona. If you want something different for Halloween, here is your book! {Affiliate links provided to fund future book purchases.}

Book Summary

Wendell, Floyd, and Mona are ready for the Halloween of their lives, but when a black cat crosses their path, they know that everything will go wrong. First, Floyd has to take his little sister trick-or-treating. Wendell's costume turned pink, and Mona's mom made her go as a fairy princess. Once they get out, they get nasty candy flavored like eggplant and broccoli. Then Leona Fleebish and her clan of witches chase them all over the neighborhood. How will Wendell, Floyd, and Mona get away from her and her friends?

Classroom Application

I used this book as a fun read aloud with my group of third graders.  We talked about their costumes for this year. Most of the kids were going to be great things like Rey from Star Wars, a cat, and Evie from Descendants. I was shocked that one of the third grade girls plans to be Micheal Myers from Halloween. Not exactly third grade material!

Anyway, after I read the book to them, they had to tell how their costume would work to get rid of the witches. Here were their ideas.

This was a simple and fun activity that helped them to focus on not only problem and solution but some creativity too. And while reading the book to them, we also stopped to make predictions.
