We're in the Wrong Book! A Book Talk Thursday Genre Sort

Book genres can be tricky for many students, but this simple and fun way to sort will have kid begging for more books!

What happens if you go to the wrong place? You feel silly and try to find your way to the right place. Bella and Ben are back again after Bella's dog was eaten by the book. You can find that review {here}. So, what happens when Bella and Ben find themselves in the "wrong book"?

A while back I wrote a Book Talk Thursday about one of my favorite Virginia Readers Choice books, This Book Just Ate My Dog. My daughter and I laughed and laughed about night after night. Now Richard Byrne is back with We're in the Wrong Book! (Affiliate links provided to fund book purchases.)

Book Summary

Bella and Ben are having a fun time bouncing from page to page when her dog bounces them right out of the book and into a counting book. They go from book to book, trying to find their way home. It's a simple story that takes the reader through different types of books, teaching them early on about various genres.

Classroom Application

I am going to use this with my upper elementary students as we review genres. I love using those book orders we get from Scholastic to help with various skills. I have used them a lot for author's purpose, but it is also great for helping with genres. Students can cut out the various books titles after reading the summary. Once they know what the book is about, they can sort the titles and pictures into the various genres. Here is an example.

I plan to do this next week when I start working with students, especially since I have a bunch of Scholastic catalogs. And what a better way to help students find new books to read and enjoy!
