Flip Flops, Beach Chairs, and Teaching With Mentor Texts Summer Blog Hop

Read alouds make a perfect way to enhance classroom instruction! Keeping students interested and engaged can be tricky sometimes. DLTA is a great way to make sure they are involved in the reading!

Summer is here, and I am excited to team up with some of my friends to bring you a mentor text blog hop like no other! All of the blogs participating have a book to share, lesson ideas, and a freebie (some forever and some limited time). So hop around and enjoy!
I know the Summer Games are later this summer, and I will actually be starting back to school when they start. How sad is that!? But, I want to share a book that every child will enjoy as they Olympig  by Victoria Jamieson.

A pig in the Animal Olympics?! You betcha!

Boomer pig is determined to be successful in the Animal Olympics, so he practices to prepare to win in at least one event in the Olympics.  He is left behind in the races and cries, but he bounces back quickly saying he will do better in the next events. He continues to be a flop in every event, but his determination to win shines through each time. He finally entered into the final event, thinking he would succeed. Again, he does not. And again, his attitude of determination shines through! Children young and old can appreciate and learn from his experience to be the best they can be!

I love how this book really gets kids involved in Boomer's own trials and tribulations for the Animal Olympics. It lends itself perfectly to a discussion during read aloud (DLTA, Directed Reading Listening Activity). As the teacher reads the book to the students, questions can be asked at specific parts of the book. Usually, these are done before the book is read to the students, but what about those times when we just need a filler? Sometimes we can create our own DLTA with basic questions that can go with any book!

Check out this post on Classroom Tested Resources that explains DLTA in detail!

And that's where my freebie comes in to play! These reading response questions are perfect for any read aloud and can be adapted in any way you wish!

The questions include a set of before, during, and after questions you can cut up into cards. You can choose the cards you want to use, or you can just choose one out of a bag. Either way, your students will be involved in the read aloud!

How can you use this beyond the read aloud? Simple, put them in a reading nook where your studetns can use them during their free reading time. They can answer htem on their own or write the answers in a reading response notebook for you to see. How perfect is that?

Now that you have my freebie, enter the Rafflecopter below for a chance to win gift cards you will enjoy!
