Spring is in the air! Pretty soon we will see butterflies all over the place, so this book is perfect for introducing and discussing butterflies. This week I am reviewing Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly by Alan Madison and Kevin Hawkes.
Velma is the youngest of three girls, and her sisters were "perfect" in the eyes of all of her teachers. Velma, on the other hand, has a hard time living up to those standards. While in first grade, Velma learns all about butterflies by researching them all herself. Her class takes a field trip to the Butterfly Conservatory, where she sees many different butterflies and is in amazement at the sights. Lo, and behold, Velma sees a monarch butterfly that hops onto her finger and goes home with her. For days the butterfly stuck with Velma on her finger, until she sees the tour guide from the conservatory in a field.
Throughout the book, Velma focuses on the big words to remember, which helps her to learn more about butterflies. These words are great for helping children learn and understand some of those important words that help students gain a better understanding of the world of butterflies.
For science teachers, this is a wonderful book to help children understand the world of butterflies. The author uses Velma's research and experiences to teach about the butterfly life cycle, including migration. It is a fun way to present the material to students.
Now, for the freebie! Last year I used these fun Dolch sight word games with my students ~ Catch a Butterfly. The students go around the gameboard, reading the sight words as they go. There are two different game boards that include all of the sight words. The second grade game is free. Just click on the picture below to grab your copy from my TPT store. Each of the other games is $2, and you can purchase the bundle for $6. That is like getting one game free! Click on the links to take you to the Preprimer, Primer, First Grade, and Third Grade games. Or click here to grab the bundle.
