Solving Problems One Step at a Time

Problems come up all the time for every one of us, but we can all find a way to make it happen. In today's Virginia Readers' Choice selection, a giraffe has to find a way to show the rest of the world who he really is.
It's not always easy to solve problems in our own lives. This giraffe shows us that there is no one way to solve any given problem.

I Am Not a Chair! by Ross Burach is the perfect book to help young readers realize that there are more than one solution to problems.

When you see a giraffe, do you think of a chair? I had never thought of that either until I read I Am Not a Chair!  In the jungle, the animals all think that the giraffe is a chair and use him as a seat. He constantly tells them he is not a chair, but they don't listen. He builds a chair, and the hippos still think he is the chair. A human even thinks he is a chair too and takes him home. But what happens when a lion sits on him as a chair? How will the giraffe get out of this situation?

Children loved reading this book and really understood that problems aren't always solved the way we think they should be. And sometimes we don't even solve the problems ourselves; they just work themselves out.

Reminding children that our own problems don't always work out the way they should. We must keep on trying and find the best way to solve our problems in any situation. I Am Not a Chair! is the perfect book for showing students that this is part of life.
