It's hard to believe I've already been back in school for almost two weeks! It has been an eventful first couple of weeks, and I wouldn't trade them for anything! We all know that first day is tough for so many of our students, whether they are new to the school or have been around for a while. A New School Year: Stories in Six Voices (affiliate link) is a new book that will help all students understand how that first day of school is different for everyone.
Book Summary
Six students from grades kindergarten through 5th grade tell us their stories as they get ready and go throughout the first day. Each of the students has his or her own "problem" to work through and helps the reader understand his or her feelings through the free verse poems. For example, Carlos is a new student in the fourth grade. His father has helped him prepare for his new school in many ways, and Carlos tells us those. Other students work through other problems our students may have, such as running late and having first day jitters.
Classroom Application
I love this book because it can be used across all elementary grade levels for so many different reasons. Kindergarten students can not only see how other kindergarteners feel the same as they do but that big kids worry too. The poetry is great for some lessons on free verse. Point of view also plays a huge role in the book. Knowing that everyone feels different on the first day of school will help students have a better understanding of how others feel. And of course, who can forget problem and solution?! Each student has a problem and must work through to get to the end of the day. I love the book A New School Year: Stories in Six Voices for so many reasons! It is a must have for the beginning of the year!
