Book Talk Thursday Takes the Fear Out of Moving with the Turtle of Oman

What would it be like to move to a foreign country? In today's Book Talk Thursday choice, Aref has to deal with just that. The Turtle of Oman by Naomi Shihab Nye tells the story of the week before Aref must move from Oman to Michigan. (Amazon affiliate links are used to fund book purchases.)

Another Virginia Readers Choice book, The Turtle of Oman tells the story of the week before Aref much leave to move to Michigan, so his parents can get further their education. Needless to say, he does not want to leave the comfort of his own life and home in Oman.

His grandfather, Sidi, helps him with his departure by taking him places and reminding him of his wonderful world around him. On the adventures he learns not only about the world around him but his own life and that all will be OK. And just like any young boy, he takes forever to pack his suitcase and packs everything he loves. His rock collection goes right in, and things he does not want to share.

The story is one of love and strength. Just as the turtles must move, so must Aref. And he realizes it through his Sidi's love and discussions. I would love to know what happens in America as Aref travels and learns about this new world.

Moving is tough, but spending time with those you love before you go can make it so much easier.
Moving far away isn't easy, but family can make all the difference. The Turtle of Oman helps young readers cope with moving far from home.
