Book Talk Thursday ~ The Dumbest Idea Ever!

You saw it right!  Today's Book Talk Thursday is all about another book from my son's summer reading list.

My son loves graphic novels, so this book was a perfect one for him to read.  The Dumbest Idea Ever! is a wonderful book that captured his attention beyond belief!

We went to the dentist on Tuesday, and he took the book with him.  He started reading it in the car, read it at the dentist, and then continued to read it at home.  He finished in 3 hours.  When I told him his friend wanted to play, he said, "I want to finish this book first."

I wanted to know why, so I picked it up and read it in a couple of hours.  It is good!  I couldn't put it down either.

The teacher in me loved it.  The young boy, who is the author, tells about his time in a Catholic middle and high school.  His teachers feel that comic books are not appropriate for children to read at school, but we all know that anything that interests kids and gets them reading is appropriate for them to read.  He ends up having chicken pox and pneumonia  during his time in middle school and loses his faith in himself.

As he enters high school, he again realizes that he is not the best student in the world and tries to win the heart of a beautiful girl.  He writes his first comic books and "publishes" it to sell at school.  He realizes it is horrible and finds a way to make it right.

Kids and adults can learn so much from this book.  I learned that kids are inspired by what they read and want to read.  They will use that passion for something they are truly passionate about.  I see it in my own son and want him to love reading.  That passion has even made him a "published" author when he wrote his own book "Harry Paper", based on Harry Potter and Origami Yoda.  He felt so proud, even though it was not so great.

Now he is writing his own comic book about him and his friends, inspired completely from reading this book.  This seems to be his summer project ~ write a book.

So, don't squelch children's dreams ~ embrace them and let them read!

Don't forget to link up again this week!
