Book Talk Thursday ~ A Hundred Summers

So this week for Book Talk Thursday, I am highlighting a summer read for us, the teachers who need a break!

About a month ago, I left for my vacation to Disney and thought I would have time to read some good books.  Boy, was I wrong!  I did finish one book I had started before our trip while on the trip during naps and long car rides, and I started the book A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams.

I love to read historical fiction, especially about the early 1900's, so this book seemed like the perfect match for a summer read.  It did not disappoint!

Right from the beginning I fell in love with the main character Lily Dane!  She reminds me so much of myself, always doing the right things to please friends and family.  The story switches back and forth from 1931-1932 and the summer of 1938 from Lily's point of view.  She has met the man of her dreams, Nick Greenwald, while in college with her childhood friend Budgie Byrne.  But as time goes on and circumstances arise, she and Nick go their separate ways.

Then in the summer of 1938, Budgie returns with Nick, her new husband.  Lily's feelings reemerge, and she longs to be with Nick again.  Much like a modern day soap opera, the book was full of scandal and deceit!

Beatriz Williams also pulls in the historical events of the North Atlantic region with the Big Storm of 1938, way before our own advances in weather predicting.  She chose the name A Hundred Summers because the storm of 1938 was considered a hundred year storm, yet Sandy came in at under a hundred years.  I hope there are no more of those in the near future!
