Sunshine Blogger Award

I was so surprised that my friend and fellow Virginia blogger Courtney from Polka Dot Lesson Plans had nominated me for the Sunshine Blogger Award.  If you haven't visited her blog, she has so many great ideas!   Plus, I love that we have actually met in person!

Thanks, Courtney!
The rules of the award are:
1. Post 11 random facts about yourself

2. Answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who nominated you

3. Nominate 11 bloggers you think bring sunshine to the world

4. Make up 11 questions for your nominations to answer.

1.  I started my teaching career as a sub in a fourth grade classroom.  The teacher refused to sign anything saying I could be a long-term sub, so I got paid $50 a day for 90 days!

2.  That same year, the teacher returned, so I spent two weeks of my 90 days in the Reading Center and was inspired to do the job I am doing now ~ Reading Specialist!

3.  I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and only saw snow twice in my life before I turned 13 and moved to Virginia.  Now I LOVE to play in the snow with or without the kids!

4.  I am allergic to the mold that makes yeast ~ Candida.  That means that when I drink alcohol or eat a lot of bread, I have major sinus issues.  That is also why I am called "The One Drink Wonder" at work.  Needless to say, I don't drink very often or very much.

5.  My favorite TV show is The Amazing Race with The Middle as a close second.

6.  If there is nothing good on TV, I watch HGTV.  That  means it is on a LOT!

7.  Reading with my kids is a number one priority for me.

8.  I have been married to the perfect man for almost 13 years and have two fun-loving children.

9.  I received my Master's in Reading from the Number 1 ranked basketball team in the nation ~ UVA!
Go Wahoos!

10.  Though I received my Master's from UVA, the first time I set foot on campus was a couple of days before graduation to pick up my cap and gown.

11.  If I have to watch a sport, basketball is my absolute favorite.

My answers from Courtney:

1. What is one thing that isn't in your curriculum that you wish you could teach?
I love teaching science.  I try to incorporate it into my reading center activities whenever I can.

2. If you could have an unlimited supply of one food what would it be?
Chocolate!

3. Have you always wanted to be a teacher?
Yes, though at one point in my life I wanted to be a garbage truck driver because I wanted to ride on the back of the truck.

4. What is your favorite season and why?
My favorite season is spring because I love the new beginnings.
5. What is the most unbelievably funny thing you've ever had to say to a child at school?
I had to tell a kindergartener one time to stop licking the table, but I really can't think of anything super funny.  I know there is something super funny, but it has just not come to me!
6. Would you rather not have any books to read for 6 months or have to reread the same book for a year?
I would rather reread the same book for a year because at least I will have something to do on the treadmill!

7. What is your favorite vacation spot and why?
I love going to the beach because it is so relaxing.  It is so nice just to sit and enjoy the waves and sunshine.

8. What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends?
I enjoy spending time with my family and just hanging out.

9. How do you relax at the end of the day?
I get into my comfy clothes and work on fun things on the computer while watching TV.  Or I play Farm Heroes or Candy Crush.

10. What is your favorite subject to teach?
Ummm...reading!  But I love the comprehension piece the most.

11. What book should I read next?
If you haven't read The Book Thief, you must!  It is so intriguing!!

And now for my nominations, {though I could nominate so many more than 11}:
1.  If you could teach any one subject all day long, what would it be and why?

2.  What is your favorite sport to play or watch?

3.  Why did you become a teacher?

4.  If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

5.  What is your favorite children's or young adult book to teach?

6.  Who is your favorite author to read as a guilty pleasure?

7.   If you could meet any one person, dead or alive, who would you like to meet?

8.  How long have you been teaching?

9.  What is your all-time favorite movie?

10.  What is one thing you miss about being a kid?

11.  What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

And thank you to all of my readers who bring sunshine to my life!  You all deserve an award!  I would love to find out more about each of you too.  Choose one question from above and answer it in the comments.

Happy Monday!

  1. Andrea-I enjoyed reading your post...Go Wahoos!!!! I had someone nominate me, so you can pick another. I really appreciate being nominated twice. :-) You might buzz over and see who I picked. I misunderstood and thought I was to pick 3 choices because the person who nominated me only picked three. My three aren't on your list though right now. Enjoy your snow day. I hope this is our last. I need to teach my kids!!!
