'Twas the Night of Book Talk Thursday

It is my favorite day of the week ~ Book Talk Thursday, and it is also the week before Thanksgiving.

Next week, I am actually going to be out for two days and will have a sub.  I picked out some super fun books for the sub to read to my groups and then complete an activity for each one.  I found the greatest book to use with the second graders: 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey, who always makes me laugh.
This kids in the book go on a field trip to a farm to see the turkeys.  While there, they enjoy playing and dancing with the turkeys on Farmer Mack Nugget's farm.  Then, they find out that the turkeys are going to become Thanksgiving dinner and freak out.  When Farmer Nugget and their teacher go to get them some water, they find a way to save their new friends.  Kids will laugh out loud when they see how the students save the turkeys.

The story is told in the rhyme and rhythm of The Night Before Christmas, which lends itself to some rhyme activities in the younger grades.  But, I plan to have my students think of other solutions the students could have come up with to save the turkeys.  I love having them think of other ideas because it makes them really dig into their brains to think of something different to go along with the story.  I can't wait to see their ideas when I return on Wednesday of next week!

I have included a freebie of the turkey I will be using for them to share their other solutions!  Just click {here} or on one of the pictures below to grab your freebie!
