First Five for Friday of October

October is here, and I love seeing the seasons change.  And I am ready for October!  I am linking up with Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday.

Here are my five random things!
The leaves are starting to turn such pretty colors.  Here is the tree right off my deck.  Love it!

My husband did not want to decorate for Halloween this year.  Not that he doesn't like it all out, but he just didn't feel like getting it all out. I know he would have done it, but I got home at a decent time on Monday.  While the kids were outside playing, I decorated for Halloween.  Here is our bannister.  The lights are from his Mom when he was a kid.  Aren't they great?  After Halloween, we will take the pumpkins off and just have the lights up through Thanksgiving.  It makes it feel so homey!

Have you been to Teaching Blog Roundup?  I am now a writer with them and will post on the third of every month.  Yesterday was my first post!  Click here or on the button below to check it out and grab a freebie!

I have been working with a push in model with first grade, which is new for me.  I sit at a table with a group during reading groups and do some activities to help them out.  The new reading series we have, The SuperKids, has these little "10 Minute Tuck Ins".  The one for Friday was to have the kids trace over the words while reading them and then write the words.  I decided to add some fun to them by writing over them with glue.  Here are the kids as they trace over the "glue" words.

It was "Fun Friday" for my second graders.  We worked all week on adding -ed to the ends of words and how to figure out a word with an -ed ending and not say "jumpted".  Today we played a game to go with my -ed reader, "The Cars Raced".  They loved it!  I am working on finishing up the unit to have it listed soon!

So, what have you done fun this week?  Link up with Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching and find out more too!

  5. Congrats on being a writer for Teaching Blog Roundup! We don't do much for Halloween, but I want to get my porch decorated a little more. So far we just have a wreath that keeps falling...

  6. I love the words with glue! I am working in a reading room this year as a reading tutor/assistant. So I teach guided reading, work with struggling reading groups and individually with students. I am learning a lot this year!

  7. I started pushing-in with kindergarten last year and it was very successful. My group was a natural part of the classroom and I loved that it cut down on transition time. With the little ones, I always felt like I was taking half the time walking them down to my room.

How are you liking Super Kids? We looked at that series a few years back but didn't have the funding for it. It looks very motivating. How is it working for the struggling reader?

PS. Looking forward to working with you through the blog hop!

    1. I am getting used to the push-in model a little more. It is becoming more natural for me, so I think it will work out well! I know what you mean about that transition time. It was quite a hassle to get them down the hallway.

SuperKids is OK. I feel like it is super scripted, so I hope that is not bad for the kids. But I have heard good things about it that I hope will work out for us. I don't like that it discourages reading on the instructional level for the students. It kind of expects everyone to be at the same place, but we will see.

I am excited about the blog hop too!
