Book Talk Thursday ~ The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig

I am back for another week of Book Talk Thursday!

This week I have been working with my groups on thinking about what they are reading.   This helps with their comprehension skills, and it is so easy and fun to do!

Today I read a fun book with my third graders that really made them think ~ The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.

Right away the kids had questions about the book. You can guess what the first one was:  Is this like The Three Little Pigs?  The book is great because it really takes the original story to a whole new level.  The three little wolves are told by their mother to go out in the world and build their own houses.  They start off with a sturdy brick house that the pig cannot blow down, so he smashes the house down.  Then they build a sturdier house of concrete, but the pig manages to use a jackhammer to knock the house down.  They then build a foolproof house, but the pig is adamant and really wants to get those wolves out of the house.  You will have to read it to find out how the wolves outwit the pig!

I marked several places in the book to stop and had them write a question about what they read on the sheet.  We then shared our questions.  I will then have the students do this with their own book or passage as they actively read the book.  This can be used with any book that is good for asking questions.  Shawna at The Picture Book Teacher's Edition has a wonderful blog post about asking questions {here}!  She explains it so well!  There is also a great list of books to read aloud for asking questions, as well as other reading comprehension strategies {here}.  And there are many other books to use as well that are not on this list!
