Five for Friday ~ Giveaway Style! {Day 5}

What a week it has been here on my little blog!  I am so enjoying all of the comments, even if I have not had time to get back to each of the comments.  It has been busy!

Anyway, I am finally linking up again with Doodle Bugs Teaching for the Five for Friday!
fiveforfriday
Here are my five random things!

1.  I came back to work after Spring Break worried that I only have a short amount of time to help the kindergarteners grasp Concept of Word!  How exciting when we practiced "Little Boy Blue" for the second time and all but one student had concept of word!  And, he was actually trying for a change.  (Usually, he does little but ...well, I won't even go there!)  Anyway, I had to do a lot of scaffolding to get them there.  Here are some of the things I did with them.

Stickers under the words to help them track.

Word cards to match up the words.
2.  Today I am heading out with third grade again to go to Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest.  I have been so many times I could almost do the tour, but it is always a little different. It is a work in progress as they renovate the home to look like it did when Jefferson lived there.  It will be fun to see what they have done since last year.  It is Thomas Jefferson's birthday weekend, so it could be interesting, especially since the first craft beer tasting is on Saturday!
3.  I have been working on Main Idea and Details with third grade as we prepare for the upcoming Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.  I have a group of students who struggle with reading, so I have this wonderful unit by Angela Nerby at Hippo Hooray for Second Grade that I have been using.  It is called Main Idea Mania, and you must check it out!

In the unit, she included some great passages with graphic organizers and a fun table craft to show that a main idea must have supporting details.  Here are some of the things my students did.

4.  What is wrong with this picture?
Need I say more?!

5.  And, now for Giveaway number 5!

  3. Oh my! So many things are wrong with the sign. The title just states two food items. The first sentence is has a bullet and isn't punctuated. Canned is spelled incorrectly.

  10. Don't cane the poor fruit!
    I am working on this very concept with my second graders. The other day, even after an explicit lesson and clear directions on a page, I still got "Dad trimed his beard" and "The bunny hoped across the grass". lol
